Bend In The Road

“…my future seemed to stretch out before me like a straight road. I thought I could see along it for many a milestone. Now there is a bend in it. I don’t know what lies around the bend, but I’m going to believe that the best does. It has a fascination of its own, that bend, Marilla. I wonder how the road beyond it goes–what there is of green glory and soft, checkered light and shadows–what new landscapes–what new beauties–what curves and hills and valleys further on.”

  1. Did I ever tell you that I took Becky to Prince Edward Island for our honeymoon? Stayed in a cottage right down the street from Green Gables. If you can ever go, do it. The island is a kaleidoscope of vivid colors from the roadside lupins, the verdant rolling hills and the North Shore as beautiful as Lucy M. depicted. I recommend going a week or two before tourism season. Shops are gearing up for the season and you will avoid the congestion of Japanese tourists. (Apparently they love Lucy’s books.) There are two large lighthouses, one on the east end of the island, one on the west. They even have a huge rock where the sea has carved an elephant. You can drive down to the large hotel that is featured in the movie as well. Lucy clearly romanticized some things, but overall it won’t disappoint. The most important thing…Becky loved it!

  2. Funny, I am actually reading this book right now for the very first time. I am thoroughly enjoying it, too! I haven’t hit this passage yet, but it is a beautiful one. “…green glory and soft, checkered light and shadows…” what a beautiful description.

    Take care, thinking of you.
